Description
To me, a short story is a brief narrative that explodes into magic. It combines the quotidian with the eternal. It suggests the powerful forces that lurk behind the familiarity of everyday life. A short story can have the power of a poem. It can make you feel that the top of your skull has been excavated. Reading the stories submitted for the Moment Magazine-Karma Foundation Fiction Contest was spooky. Often I felt that the authors were channeling Isaac Bashevis Singer and Cynthia Ozick. It was as if the desire to depict Jewish subject matter had cast the authors back into the past. They were sitting at the feet of the masters and trying to replicate their magic. But magic is a tricky thing. It has to come unbidden. The first-place winner, "Jerusalem Stone," with its ancient landscape and modern conflicts, brought me firmly into the present. That's what stories are meant to do. --Erica Jong, 2009 Moment Magazine-Karma Foundation Short Fiction Contest Judge
